“Bertie”
Chapter 2 – 27th July 2022 – 2nd October 2022
It’s been nearly 10 weeks since I wrote the last blog and I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone and looking back at my diary how much has happened.
On Friday 29th July we got up at 2am, drove to Newcastle airport and got our flights to Bulgaria , everything went well at the airport and we even got two seats at the front of the plane which certainly made the flight more enjoyable with all the extra leg room. We were at our apartment in Sunny Beach for 12pm, got unpacked and headed straight to the beach, what a beautiful place, miles of golden sands and beautiful views onto the Black Sea. We spent the week sunbathing, swimming, getting pampered, we even went to a foam party on the Monday afternoon, (this was something that has been on my manifestation list). I did love Bulgaria although I couldn’t find a lot of choices for my vegetarian diet I did eat a lot of salad and chips. I got really excited 2 days before we were due to go home when I noticed a stall that had vegetarian chicken kebabs, looking forward to something different I have to say I laughed out loud when my vegetarian chicken turned out to be chips and yet again I was having salad and chips. We had an amazing week in Bulgaria, somewhere I have never been before but would definitely go back again.

Our next adventure was staying in Richmond, Yorkshire for 3 weeks, we were dog sitting for Alan’s family, looking after little Molly. Lots happened whilst in Richmond, we dog walked twice a day, joined the gym for 3 weeks, we did work outs in the gym, yoga classes and used the pool for swimming. On the days we weren’t at the gym we practised our running on Richmond racecourse (we have signed up for a 10k), I was doing lots of studying for my hypnotherapy course and also my nutrition course and we began building my new website as I will now be taking my work online. Whilst in Richmond we spent some time looking at camper vans and on the 18th August we knew we had found Bertie when we walked into him and there was a white feather lying on the carpet inside. I drove to Berwick the second weekend we were there and spent a lovely weekend on Spittal beach with my daughter and grandsons, we were pleased that it turned out to be a beautiful sunny weekend and made the most of the golden sand , making sandcastles and digging holes, we had lots of laughs and really enjoyed our weekend.

On the 2nd September we left Richmond and headed to Southport to help my sister celebrate her 50th. I cannot quite believe that my youngest sister is now 50. After booking into our hotel we all meet in the lounge in our matching “Polly” t-shirts. After a couple of beverages we got ready for dinner, dinner was a self service buffet at the hotel then there was entertainment, the singer providing the entertainment belted out all the old classics and we had a great time strutting our stuff on the dance floor. Next morning we had a bus tour to Liverpool, we were driven around all the popular sights, given some history and then we were left with some free time to ourselves to explore Liverpool. That evening it was the same set up with a self service Buffett dinner at the hotel and the same singer, another fun night dancing. The evening finished at 10pm and we went a walk for a bit of fresh air before bed but we ,heard some loud music and ended up in a bar dancing to live bands until 1am. We left Liverpool on the Sunday and drove back to Berwick Upon Tweed.

We were in Berwick for a day, got the car all packed up with everything we would need for Bertie and set off to Teeside to finally pick him up. When we got to the garage we got shown all around Bertie, and everything was explained in how he worked. There was also another feather but this time sitting on top of the back registration plate, we have kept this one. We unloaded the car and packed up the camper van and headed off firstly to get some shopping then drove down the east coast of north England, first stop, Whitby. In 3 weeks we have stayed at, Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Sleight, Seaham, Durham, South Hetton, Haltwhistle, Longton, Annan, Irvine, Skelmorie and Bonnie Balloch. We have slept at a mixture of carparks overlooking the North Sea, carparks on the side of the main road, campsites in farms, carparks in the forest and a luxury campsite at Balloch (were my grandsons had a sleepover and loved every minute). It has been a mixture of wild camping and staying at campsites and I have loved every minute of it. We have walked for miles on coastal routes, ran miles on promenades at the seaside, explored lots of forests , walked part of Hadrians wall, paddled in the sea and watched sunsets from the middle of nowhere. It feels very primal and everything is back to basics but very enjoyable and you can’t just take all the necessities we have at home for granted, it certainly makes you more grateful for the simple things in life.

We parked up Bertie, stayed in Berwick for 2 days then headed to Glasgow on 1st October, we went to Balloch first to help my niece celebrate her birthday then headed to Glasgow and booked into our hotel. We went into town centre and had a big bowl of pasta, stocking our reserves full of carbohydrates for tomorrows 10 k. I awoke on the Sunday feeling excited and looking forward to the race. We made our way to George Square and soaked up the atmosphere, did our warm up then at 9.36am started our 10k run to Glasgow Green. The amount of support that is there is amazing and it definetly helps when you hear the singing, cheering and music. I cannot began to tell you how delighted I was to finish the race in 1.00.00, 1 hour exactly and that had been my wish to do it in an hour, couldn’t quite believe it was an hour to the millisecond. We spent the rest of the day celebrating in Glasgow.

The feeling of achieving this 10k means so much to me , especially when I think back to the days when for years I barely left my house and couldn’t walk the length of myself without being totally exhausted. I have come a long way since my illness started 24 years ago, I never take anything for granted and I am truly grateful for everyday and like to make the most of every experience possible.
My advice to everyone would be live life to the full, enjoy every experience, be grateful for what you have , laugh every day, and do what scares you and see how good it makes you feel when you have achieved it.
Love life
